CEO and Chairman Daniel Friedmann and Co-Founder and CTO Olivia Norton are leading Sanctuary AI's next phase of growth, accelerating the commercialization of physical AI for industrial applications.

    Daniel Friedmann

    Daniel Friedmann is Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Sanctuary AI, and is currently helping ICEYE as a strategic advisor.  Daniel was Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Carbon Engineering Ltd., a climate solutions company, until November 2023. During his time at CE, CE’s Market cap increased 40X, common share value 20X, employees 15x, and its first commercial plant was financed at 1.1 billion USD with no shareholder dilution.  Prior to Carbon Engineering, Friedmann led aero-space company MDA as CEO for 20 years, during which time the company went public, its revenue grew 19-fold, and market capitalization increased 35-fold.

    Daniel was named Brendan Wood TopGun CEO in Canada in 2015-2016, a designation awarded as an expression of the highest level of confidence in a CEO, as voted by key investors and stakeholders.

    Olivia Norton

    Olivia Norton co-founded Sanctuary in 2018 and is our Chief Technology Officer and Chief Product Officer. Prior to founding Sanctuary, Olivia led the Vancouver-based Artificial General Intelligence group at Kindred AI and previously worked in consulting for the energy industry and R&D at the Institute for Biomechanics at ETH Zurich. Passionate about creating and scaling impactful technology, Olivia lends her voice and expertise to a variety of organizations and groups in the Vancouver tech ecosystem. She is a member of the Advisory Board at the Vancouver Economic Commission and a founding member of the Frontier Collective. She is a regular guest speaker at the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, the University of Calgary, and Science World. Olivia is a 2018 BC Business 30 under 30 award recipient and a 2019 Schulich School of Engineering Alumni Award winner.

    Olivia holds a Master of Engineering in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of British Columbia and a Bachelor of Science with Distinction in Computer Engineering, specializing in Biomedical Engineering, from the University of Calgary. Olivia has her level 2 International Sommelier Guild Certification and has completed yoga teacher training. She continues to practice yoga and is a hobbyist photographer, runner, gardener, and dog lover.

    Ajay Agarwal

    Ajay Agrawal is a co-founder of Sanctuary. He is founder of the Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) and cofounder of NEXT Canada, both not-for-profit programs that support founders and builders. He is an economist and a professor at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, specializing in the economics of artificial intelligence. He has published over 70 peer-reviewed articles and co-authored Prediction Machines (2018) and Power & Prediction (2022), and co-edited The Economics of Artificial Intelligence: An Agenda (2019), The Economics of Artificial Intelligence Health Care Challenges (2024), The Economics of Transformative AI (2026), and Bayesian Entrepreneurship (2026). He holds advisory and research roles with the National Bureau of Economic Research, Brookings Institution, McKinsey Technology Council, Carnegie Mellon University, Stanford's Digital Economy Lab, and the Vector Institute.

    Marty Reed

    Marty Reed is a seasoned Bay Area executive and investor who relocated to Vancouver in 2015 to launch Evok Innovations, a corporate innovation firm that integrates Silicon Valley startup culture and venture capital into traditional R&D. As managing partner at Evok, he leads strategy, team building, and investments, and serves on multiple boards including Sanctuary AI, MineSense, DISA Technologies, Ekona Power, VEERUM, and was previously on the board of DarkVision (CVCA Deal of the Year). Prior to Evok, he was a Partner at The Roda Group, leading early-stage clean tech investments and serving on the boards of Svante, Axine, Gridtential, and Carbon Neutral Ag Sciences. Earlier in his career, he held senior roles at Cardstore.com, Game Ready, and Ask Jeeves. Marty holds an MBA from John F. Kennedy University, a BSc in Mathematics from Carnegie Mellon University, and began his career as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy.

    John Watson

    John Watson brings more than 26 years of experience at the executive officer level in large organizations. As Group President of Bell Business Markets, AI Fabric, Bell Cyber and Ateko, he leads Canada’s largest enterprise communications business and has created a $1B ARR AI start-up since 2023, targeting $2B ARR by 2028. The start-up has three focus areas: Aleko - enterprise digital and AI transformations, Bell Cyber – AI Autonomous SOC, Bell AI Fabric – the leading Canadian AI factory builder with an 800 MW portfolio. John also leads Bell’s Data Engineering and AI team. Prior to Bell, John held senior leadership roles in the management consulting, consumer packaged goods, and healthcare/pharma sectors with multinational organizations. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration and MBA from the Schulich School of Business.
